Adrian Quaife-Hobbs a le mode d’emploi
La saison 2011 est déjà dans le viseur des teams de Formula Renault 3.5 Series, ainsi sur vingt deux pilotes en piste aujourd’hui à Barcelone, seulement huit ont concouru dans cette discipline cette saison. Après une matinée pluvieuse, où Brendon Hartley (P1 Motorsport) profitait de son expérience pour briller, Adrian Quaife-Hobbs (Comtec Racing) et Alexander Rossi (ISR) ont pris les choses en mains, l’après-midi. Le Britannique termine en tête devant l’Américain. Suite des essais demain.
Pluie et vent sont au programme de cette première journée d’essais collectifs, deux jours à peine après la finale épique entre Mikhail Aleshin (Carlin), Champion 2010 de Formula Renault 3.5 Series, et son dauphin Daniel Ricciardo (Tech 1 Racing). Vingt-deux pilotes sont aujourd’hui en piste. Cette journée marque l’arrivée officielle de BVM Target dans la discipline, avec les pilotes de la Ferrari Driver Academy au volant, les Italiens Mirko Bortolotti et Daniel Zampieri.

Pierre Thiriet (Junior Lotus Racing), deuxième de l’Eurocup Mégane Trophy 2010, s’installe lui pour la première fois de sa carrière au volant d’une monoplace.
Le début de matinée se déroule sous des trombes d’eau et les pilotes ne se précipitent pas en piste. La pluie cesse et les conditions s’améliorent peu à peu. Le drapeau rouge est brandi à plusieurs reprises suite à différentes sorties de pistes, sans grandes conséquences. Albert Costa (Epsilon Euskadi) est le premier à chausser des pneus slicks à une heure du drapeau à damier. À partir de là, la hiérarchie évolue sans cesse. Albert Costa, Anton Nebilitskiy (KMP Racing), Brendon Hartley et Alexander Rossi pointent tour à tour en haut de la feuille de temps. Dans le dernier tour, Brendon Hartley, en 1’36’’623, met tout le monde d’accord et signe le meilleur chrono. Il devance Alexander Rossi, Daniel Zampieri, Julian Leal (ISR) et Albert Costa.
Les conditions sont beaucoup plus clémentes l’après-midi, avec une piste sèche durant les quatre heures de séance. Les pilotes bouclent ainsi de nombreux tours, le plus assidu aujourd’hui étant Daniel McKenzie (Fortec Motorsport), avec 90 tours couverts. Alexander Rossi, déjà vu en Formula Renault 3.5 Series cette année à Monaco, fait parler la poudre à mi-séance, avec un tour bouclé en 1’33’’660, plus rapide que la pole réalisée ce week-end par Daniel Ricciardo, en configuration aérodynamique light. L’Américain passe la majeure partie de l’après-midi en tête. Seulement dans les dix dernières minutes, les pneus neufs sortent de toutes parts. Adrian Quaife-Hobbs améliore et passe en tête, en 1’33’’595. Il boucle cette première journée d’essais collectifs au premier rang, devant Alexander Rossi, Robert Wickens (Fortec Motorsprot), Walter Grubmuller (P1 Motorsport) et Julien Leal.
